Falcons hand Wildcats first win

The Air Force women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 match to Weber State Friday night in day one action at the Falcon Invitational at the Cadet Soccer Stadium.

The loss drops the Falcons to 6-4-1 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 1-9-0. In the opening game, UNLV (6-4-0) coasted to a 5-0 win over VMI (1-8-0).

Lindsay Ortgiesen’s goal eight minutes into the match, ultimately decided the game. Ortgiesen struck from 35 yards out, curling a long shot to the top left corner of the box for the score.

It was a tough loss for Air Force, which out-shot Weber State 20-12. Bridgett Murphy led the Falcons with five shots and fellow junior Kelly Bieber with four shots.

Weber State goalkeeper Ryann Waldman recorded 12 saves in the win. Air Force ‘keeper Kelly Stambaugh had three saves in the loss.

In the opening match, UNLV dominated VMI in the 5-0 win. Ashleigh Shoughro scored two goals and had two assists to lead a Rebel attack that outshot the Keydets 38-3.

The Falcon Invitational wraps up Sunday with another doubleheader. VMI and Air Force play the first match at 11 a.m. with UNLV taking on Weber State at 1 p.m.
