Bast, DiGiacomo lead; men fall
It was a mixed Sunday for the University of Denver soccer teams, as the women won at home while the men fell on the road.
PIONEERS 2, WKU 0: Sophomore forward Kaitlin Bast and freshman midfielder Nicholette DiGiacomo scored to lead the Pioneers (8-2-0, 2-0-0 Sun Belt Conference) to a 2-0 victory over Western Kentucky (3-7-0, 1-1-0 SBC) on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Kalie Vaughn dribbled toward the goal, beating the defenders and goalkeeper, and slipped the ball to Bast, who hammered it into the net in the 45th minute.
“We had good timing from Kaitlin and a great individual effort from Kalie,” head coach Jeff Hooker commented.
Denver capped the win in the 77th minute when freshman forward Kristen Hamilton held the ball in the top of the box and faked out the defenders before flicking it to DiGiacomo, who struck it in the corner of the goal.
“I thought we did a great job today,” Hooker said. “We changed our starting lineup and played 18 players today. This was very much of a team weekend in that some of our players got to contribute more than usual. We beat two quality opponents, so it’s a great start to the conference season.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Lara Campbell recorded six saves and her second consecutive shutout.
STANFORD 1, PIONEERS (Men) 0: The University of Denver men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Stanford in the Stanford Nike Classic at Kagan Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
“I’m tremendously disappointed in the result today,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “It’s not sour grapes, but I truly feel that we were the better team for 75 minutes. Against a good team like Stanford you have to play 90 minutes.”
Denver (3-3-2) held a 17-11 advantage in shots and 12-1 in corner kicks, but the Cardinal (4-4-0) got the game’s only goal, when Dersu Abolfathi crossed to Adam Jahn, who scored on a volley during the 59th minute.
“I think we learned a lot about our team this weekend,” Muuss said. “If we continue to work hard, get better and play the way we did this weekend, we are going to be a difficult opponent the rest of the season.”
Senior goalkeeper Teale Stone made four saves in the game, while Stanford goalkeeper Jason Dodson had a pair of saves for his team’s fourth-straight win.
