The Air Force Academy women’s soccer team dismantled the visitors from Virginia Military Institute on Sunday, while the men completed a dismal West Coast swing with another loss.

AFA (women) 3, VMI 0: Air Force women’s soccer notched its fifth shutout of the year with a 3-0 win over VMI Sunday afternoon in day two action at the Falcon Invitational at the Cadet Soccer Stadium.

The win improved the Falcons to 7-4-1 on the season and dropped the Keydets to 1-9-0. UNLV (7-4-0) captured the Falcon Invite title with a 1-0 win in game two over Weber State (1-10-0).

Eryn Avjian scored four minutes into the match and Air Force never looked back. Megan Dozier and Bridgett Murphy also scored for the Falcons.

Avjian netted her second goal of the season in the 5th minute on a well-placed pass from Murphy. Murphy brought the ball into the box from the right end line and chipped the ball to the middle where Avjian was in place to one-time the shot into the net.

Dozier made it a 2-0 game in the 73rd minute as she took a pass from Leah Bratt and scored from eight yards out.

Murphy put the finishing touches on the game with a goal in the 88th minute, her third of the year. Dozier brought the ball in from the right end line and passed to the middle of the box, where Murphy sent the ball into the net from eight yards out.

Junior Sharon Aradine recorded the shutout for the Falcons, notching two saves in the start.

CAL STATE Northridge 4, AFA (Men) 0: The Air Force men’s soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Cal State Northridge Sunday in the Falcons’ final non-conference game of the season.

With their first victory of the season, the Matadors improved to 1-6-1, while AFA fell to 2-6-0.

After a scoreless 45 minutes, Camilo Rojas put CSUN on the scoreboard just 35 seconds into the second half to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead. Rojas took advantage of a misplayed back-pass from a Falcon defender to his goalkeeper by quickly corralling the ball and placing it in the empty net.

A 50/50 ball in the 51st minute changed the dynamic of the game when Air Force goalkeeper Matt Underwood and Rojas collided in mid-air in front of the Falcon goal when each attempted to gain possession of the ball. Players from both teams gathered around the duo. Finally, both Rojas and AFA defender Eric Tise were removed from the game as each received a red card for their actions following the play.

Alberto Rosas put the Matadors up 2-0 after finding himself one-on-one with Underwood following a nice pass from Rafael Garcia.

CSUN struck again when Rene Anguiano found the lower right corner of the net after taking a pass from Mattias Bonhevi. After AFA junior John Tilton received a red card in the 68th minute, the Matadors took full advantage of the extra man and put in their fourth goal in the 79th minute when Sam Ball beat AFA backup keeper Patrick Gould.

Matador goalkeeper Michael Abalos easily saved both Air Force shots on goal to earn his first win of the season.
