The Pioneers women’s soccer team continued to take command of the Sun Belt Conference with a 2-0 victory agains the University of South Alabama on Friday.

Midfielder Katy Van Lieshout and forward Cassidy Larson each scored their first goals of the season as the Pioneers moved to 11-2-0, 5-0-0 SBC on Friday afternoon.

South Alabama fell to (4-9-1, 2-3 SBC).

“We had a frustrating first half, but we switched things up and put Katy Van Lieshout up closer to goal, and she ended up scoring,” coach Jeff Hooker said.

Larson added another goal for Denver.  Larson took the first shot off of a rally between Denver and the South Alabama defenders and was blocked. Midfielder Nicholette DiGiacomo shot off the rebound and was also blocked, but the second time was the charm for Larson, as she buried the ball after getting DiGiacomo’s rebound in the 84th minute.

Denver outshot South Alabama 8-7 and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. ‘Keeper Lara Campbell recorded two saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Campbell has allowed just one goal in 438:30 of conference play this season for a 0.21 goals against average.

“We are trying to come out of this weekend 2-0 and control our own destiny, so to speak, to get the first place seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament,” Hooker said.

The Pioneers travel to Troy, Ala., to face the Troy Trojans on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Men Win: The Pioneers men’s soccer team continued their hot start in conference play, beating New Mexico 1-0 on Friday night.

With the win, DU improved to 5-3-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Lobos have an identical 5-3-2 overall mark, but slipped to 1-1-0 in the MPSF.

Denver’s Kellan Christensen scored the game’s lone goal in the 66th minute. Christensen was assisted by Zach Bolden, who crossed the ball from the right side. It was one of the Pioneers’ four shots on the night.

“They had one scoring chance the whole game and they scored a goal on it,” said Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “It’s pretty disappointing.”

UNM had 21 shots to Denver’s four, including eight shots on goal, but the Lobos couldn’t find the back of the net.
