Russell bomb leads to win
The Buffaloes ended their scoring drought and picked up a home win and a conference victory on a cool, wet Sunday in Boulder.
The Buffaloes (6-7-1) ended a 425-minute scoring drought, picking up a 3-1 win to make their record 2-3-1 in the Big 12 Conference. Iowa State (6-7-2) suffered its second league loss of the weekend after losing to Nebraska on Friday, dropping to 1-4 in conference play.
“You never know what you’re going to get after a loss, and we had a very difficult day yesterday as a team during training,” head coach Bill Hempen said. Saturday “they came out and put it together, and they succeeded. The team itself was fantastic today.”
It didn’t start in fantastic fashion as ISU got onto the scoreboard first. Five of CU’s seven losses this season have come after the opponent scored first.
As Iowa State was putting pressure on the CU goal, Jessica Stewart – a freshman from Fort Collins, Colorado – followed her own rebound with a shot from the right side. ‘Keeper Annie Brunner got her left hand on the ball, but couldn’t stop the shot in the 24th minute.
Colorado tied the game 1-1 in the 31st minute when a seeing-eye pass from Kate Russell found Shaye Marshall, who delivered her second goal of the season.
In the second half, Russell netted the game winner for the Buffaloes, as she launched a strike from 25 yards out in the 80th minute to give CU a 2-1 lead. It was her second goal of the season.
“I looked up and saw the goal and hit it as hard as I could,” said Russell.
In the closing minutes, Kassidy Fitzpatrick sent the ball down the left sideline to Alex Dohm, who passed it to Kym Lowry. From the right side, Lowry fired past Maddie Jobe to secure the win for the Buffs in the 88th minute.
The Buffaloes travel to Oklahoma for a pair of conference matches as they take on No. 7 Oklahoma State on Thursday at 6 p.m. and Oklahoma on Sunday at noon. The matchup in Stillwater, Oklahoma, against the Cowgirls will be nationally televised on the Fox Soccer Channel.
