Falcons fly by 9-man UNLV
Kevin Durr and Brian Klazura each notched a second half goal and Matt Underwood posted his first career shutout Friday as the Air Force men’s soccer team defeated UNLV, 2-0, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
The Falcons, winners of a season-high two straight games, improved to 4-8-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the MPSF, while the Rebels fell to 4-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in league play.
After a scoreless first half, Air Force caught a break with less than three minutes gone in the second half when UNLV’s Jaime Calvo was given a red card after a hard tackle from behind.
The Falcons dominated play, but couldn’t score until Caleb Downey was fouled in the box and the Falcons were awarded a penalty kick in the 68th minute. Durr gave AFA a 1-0 lead, beating Rebel goalie Simon Cook low and to the left.
Immediately following the PK, UNLV’s Drew Gleason was sent off after receiving a red card and the Falcons played the rest of the way with a two-man advantage.
Klazura sent home an insurance goal in the final minute after a cross from Kyle Moses and sending a shot from five yards past Cook.
“I really like the way we played tonight,” head coach Doug Hill said. “We played a very good all-around game from the 18 to 18, but we need to be a little more dangerous in the final third. Kevin Durr and Eric Wilson played great for us tonight and it was nice to see Matt Underwood get his first career shutout.”
Underwood saved all four of UNLV’s shots on goal, two in each half, while Cook made six saves for UNLV.
The Falcons return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday against New Mexico at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
