Lobos take care of Pioneers
The DU men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to New Mexico after Lobos forward Josh Caffey scored with just 2:32 remaining at CIBER Field on Friday night.
“It was disappointing to have them score in the last three minutes,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “We put in a lot of effort and played 65 minutes of good soccer. We had a good first half. Now we have to go from here and learn from our mistakes, as we turn our focus to UNLV on Sunday.”
Matt Armstrong took a corner kick that flew to the far side of the goal, and Caffey booted it inside the near post.
Denver (5-4-3, 2-1-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) out-shot the Lobos 6-4 in the first half, but New Mexico (8-4-2, 2-2-0 MPSF) had a flurry of shots in the second half to end the game with a 19-10 advantage, as well as a 9-6 advantage on corner kicks.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Joe Willis made five saves, while New Mexico goalkeeper Justin Holmes had six saves.
Denver next faces UNLV at CIBER Field at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
