Pioneers heading for tournament time
Forward Kalie Vaughn scored her ninth goal of the season as No. 17 Denver defeated North Texas, 1-0 at CIBER Field, completing its Sun Belt Conference season undefeated this weekend.
The Pioneers (17-2, 11-0 SBC) earned their fifth outright regular season title and are the No. 1 seed in the Sun Belt Conference tournament. The win on Friday maintained Denver’s undefeated streak at home.
“We had a sound effort tonight and were able to defeat a really good team that we may run into later in the playoffs,” coach Jeff Hooker said. “We were able to send our seniors out in great fashion. One of our goals was to go undefeated at home and we did that.”
The Mean Green (12-6-2, 7-3-1 SBC) started out strong, firing three shots in the first three minutes of play. It was Denver that scored, however, when Vaughn’s shot from 35 yards out deflected off of a North Texas defender, and into the goal.
The Pioneers outshot North Texas 15-13 and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. ‘Keeper Lara Campbell made three saves, increasing her shutout count to seven on the season. Campbell has shared three shutouts with Maria Khan. Campbell allowed only three goals in 11 conference games this season.
The Pioneers head to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Bowling Green, Ky. to face the No. 8 seed Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
