Pioneer trio honored
A trio of University of Denver soccer players were honored on Monday for on-field and classroom contributions.
DU defender Jessie Rogers was named one of CS360′s Primetime Performers of the Week, College Soccer 360 announced.
Rogers helped limit North Texas to just three shots on goal and only one corner kick, as the Pioneers completed their regular season sweep of the Sun Belt Conference. In 11 conference games, Rogers and the Pioneer defense has held opponents to just three goals off 101 shots, only 41 of which were on goal.
The defender has started every game for the Pioneers and scored against then-No.10 UCLA on Sept. 17.
The Pioneers next travel to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Bowling Green, Ky. to face the No. 8 seed Louisiana-Lafayette at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Denver clinched the No. 1 seed and has won seven of the nine Sun Belt Conference Tournaments in which they have participated, including the past four.
Class Standout: DU men’s soccer players Michael Perry and Matt Kirby were both named CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 for the University Division, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Monday.
Denver’s senior captain, Perry has a 3.98 cumulative grade point average in finance and also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors last year. The anchor of Denver’s defense, Perry was given the John Byrden Award last season for leadership, character and teamwork, and was All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honorable mention as a sophomore. Perry had a goal against then-No. 20 Georgetown and assisted on a goal in each game last weekend, as the Pioneers took over first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mountain Division.
Kirby is a sophomore who has a cumulative 3.92 GPA in finance. Kirby also was voted CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-MPSF last season. The forward has earned a spot on the Dean’s List every quarter at DU, including a perfect 4.0 GPA all three quarters last year.
The men will host Air Force in the regular season finale at CIBER Field on Friday at 7 p.m. The Pioneers look to clinch the conference division with a win or tie against the Falcons, which would also give DU a bye in the MPSF Championship Tournament first round.
