University of Denver junior midfielder Jarod Stigall scored a goal, but the top seeded Pioneers were upset by No. 5 seed Sacramento State 3-1 at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The host Hornets (9-4-7) broke the scoreless tie in the 53rd minute, when Rory O’Day scored off a header off a corner kick.

Sacramento State added a second goal at the 71:35 mark, but Stigall scored just 19 seconds later to put Denver (9-6-4) back in the game. Junior forward Kellan Christensen and sophomore midfielder Mark Weigand assisted on the play.

The Hornets sealed the game with another goal in the 77th minute, when Fernando Cabadas collected a rebounder off a Denver defender and found the back of the net.

The Pioneers, who won the MPSF regular season championship, were out-shot 18-7 by the Hornets, who also had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Denver must now hope for an at-large bid when the NCAA Tournament field is announced on ESPNU on Monday at 2:30 p.m.
