Bravo named player of the week
Sporting Kansas City forward Omar Bravo was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters for Week 1 of the 2011 MLS season.
Bravo tallied two goals in his MLS debut, leading Kansas City to a 3-2 win over Chivas USA.
The Mexican national team standout scored his first goal in the third minute of first half stoppage time as he chipped a bouncing service from Kei Kamara over the head of goalkeeper Zach Thornton from the top of the 18-yard-box. The goal capped a 19-pass sequence by Sporting.
Bravo added his second goal in the 74th minute, again set up by Kamara, who headed the final pass. Bravo raced into the penalty area and beat a charging Thornton with a deft touch off the outside of his right foot.
Record Setters: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Bravo is one of 14 players in MLS history to score multiple goals in his MLS debut – and one of three to do so on Saturday along with Vancouver’s Eric Hassli and D.C. United’s Charlie Davies.
Bravo, 31, joined Sporting Kansas City as a Designated Player before this season after scoring more than 100 goals in Mexico’s Primera Division, most of them with Chivas de Guadalajara, and another 15 goals for Mexico.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
The Two Omars: ColoradoSoccerNow voted for Bravo after watching the KC-Chivas match. Bravo was excellent off the ball and elevated his team. The second choice was Colorado’s Omar Cummings. Cummings so badly exposed the Timbers defense that an uninjured centerback was taken off at halftime of Saturday’s 3-1 win.
