Landon Donovan’s return to the field and the team’s return to form netted Donovan league honors for the week.

The LA Galaxy star was named the MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters on Monday after he scored two goals and added an assist in the Galaxy’s 3-0 win over the Portland Timbers on Saturday at The Home Depot Center.

Donovan – who has battled a knee injury in recent weeks and made his first start since April 2 – scored his first goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 8th minute after he was fouled inside the Portland box by Timbers defender Rodney Wallace.

He added a second goal midway through the second half with a wide-open snap header to the far post off a cross from Juan Pablo Angel.

Donovan also assisted on Chad Barrett’s beautiful right-footed goal in the fourth minute, which set the tone early for the Galaxy’s most emphatic win of the season.

CSN Vote: Donovan was the choice here. He was the player of the week, and showed how you turn a team of champions into a championship team. Jan Gunnar Solli picked up the second-place ballot for his three assists in the Red Bull rout of DC United.
