Jeff Larentowicz provided the offense and the Rapids produced just enough defense to escape from New York with a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night and a vital point on the road.

In a game that featured four goals in the span of five minutes, Larentowicz got the first and third tallies, putting in a rebound of his penalty kick and delivering a scorcher to the far post off another restart.

Each time the Rapids scored, however, the New York Red Bulls answered. Goals from Thierry Henry and Luke Rodgers brought the home side even.

After the scoring outbreak ended in the 33rd minute, each team tried to find a winner, but to no avail. Instead, fans in New Jersey were treated to 90 minutes of back-and-forth action that never brought a winner, but left the outcome in doubt for all.

Streaking: Getting the tie brought the Rapids record to 4-3-5, 17 points. Colorado has now gone six games unbeaten. The team has also won only one of those games.

Scoring: After scoring only four goals in the previous eight games, Larentowicz’s brace was as unlikely as it was crucial. When Andre Akpan earned the penalty kick, Larentowicz fired his shot low and to the keeper’s right. It wasn’t far enough to go in, but it also earned the “Ginger Ninja” a rebound that he coolly slotted home.

The second goal seemed to catch New York sleeping. Larentowicz received the ball on an indirect free kick and rocketed a shot back across the goal.

Next: After the disappointing 0-0 tie with Toronto FC at home on Sunday, the Rapids were lively and looked like there might be a winner on Wednesday. Instead, Colorado returns to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park for a Saturday showdown with vagabond Sporting Kansas City.

KC has played every game on the road while waiting for the team’s new park in Kansas City, Kans., to open. It has been reflected in KC’s record as the redubbed Wizards have only a season-opening win to celebrate.
