Macoumba Kandji has returned to practice for the first time since he tore a ligament in the MLS Cup in November, but the injury list for the Colorado Rapids is not getting any shorter.

Marvell Wynne and Joseph Nane went on the injured list for Saturday’s showdown with Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Union.

Nane, 24, separated his right shoulder – for the third time in a year – shortly after entering Saturday’s match against Sporting Kansas City and was quickly subbed out.

“Everytime it pops out, before it comes back in, the pain is sharp,” Nane told ColoradoRapids.com on Tuesday morning. “Once it pops out, there’s always a chance it can happen again.”

The first time he separated his shoulder was in 2009 during his senior year at Old Dominion. The shoulder popped out again on June 2, 2010 while playing for Toronto FC, and he then had surgery in November to repair the damaged tissue. Nane said that on Saturday, his shoulder popped back into place as he was being helped to the sideline. He was scheduled to have an MRI on Tuesday and is optimistic he can return to training next week.

Wynne, who missed a game earlier this season with a right hamstring injury, reaggravated the injury and had to leave the game versus KC with minutes left to play. The Rapids had used all three of their substitutions by that time and finished the game with 10 men.

Cummings Along: Things took a turn the opposite way for Omar Cummings, who is recovering from a sprained right ankle which he injured on May 4 at Houston. Cummings had been named to the Jamaican National Team roster, but Tuesday was formally removed from participating in the Gold Cup as his injury has not healed in time for him to participate.

“It’s still a little bit weak, a little bit sore,” said Cummings on Tuesday. “I’m still not able to kick the ball or do certain turns and explode. I think the injury progressed very well in the beginning but kind of phased out and it’s been very slow since. Maybe I pushed it a little bit too much in the beginning and maybe that wasn’t the best thing. I’m taking it one step at a time now and hopefully I can come back stronger.”

Going Slowly: Kandji’s story is the reverse, as he began joining his teammates on the practice field in the past week, although on a limited basis.

“I’m taking it one step at a time, I don’t want to rush anything,” said Kandji, who has missed the entire season while recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL.

Kandji joined Cummings on Tuesday morning to work on dribbling and shooting drills with assistant coach Steve Guppy. He will have an MRI with his doctor in New York next week to evaluate the progress of his knee before moving on to the next step in his rehabilitation.

Jamie Smith worked with fitness coach John Ireland on Tuesday morning as he also looks to return from a calf injury that has sidelined him the past two games.
