Pioneer men open with Creighton
The No. 19 University of Denver men’s soccer team opens the regular season against No. 6 Creighton at CIBER Field on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Pioneers earned a pair of draws last weekend against Wisconsin and Ohio State in exhibition games.
Denver returns 17 letterwinners, including eight starters, from a squad that won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season championship in 2010 and earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament, the team’s second in the past three seasons. DU also adds a recruiting class that ranked No. 19 in the nation, according to College Soccer News.
The Bluejays are 2-0-1 all-time against DU, but are playing in Denver for the first time since a 0-0 draw in 1980. Creighton, who was picked to win the Missouri Valley title in the preseason coaches’ poll, has appeared in 18 of the past 19 NCAA Tournaments, including three College Cups.
This offseason, the Bluejays hired legendary head coach Elmar Bolowich, who guided North Carolina for 22 years, winning the 2001 NCAA champions and appearing in the College Cup in each of the last three years.
