Rapids dump Chivas USA 2-0
Two teams playing out the string on the 2012 season produced an entertaining match on Saturday night as the Rapids defeated Chivas USA 2-0 at the Home Depot Center.
Martin Rivero and Kamani Hill found the back of the net in the first half and the defense proved stout in the second half as the Rapids earned a shutout on the road. ‘Keeper Steward Ceus went 90 minutes and earned the victory.
It was a pleasant change in an abysmal season for Colorado. The Rapids improved to 10-19-4 and remained two spots above the cellar-dwelling Goats.
Next Up: The win doesn’t provide any playoff push for Colorado, as those days passed long ago. It does, however, give the team some momentum for the Oct. 27 season finale against the Houston Dynamo at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.
Youth Movement?: Leading up to the game, coach Oscar Pareja talked about giving little used players a chance to make an impression for 2013. It didn’t happen on Saturday. Other than Ceus, the only starter with fewer than 10 appearances on the field was midfielder Hendry Thomas.
The lack of youngsters on the field wasn’t much of a surprise. It just added to the general air of disappointment that has filled the club this season. The attractive offensive squad that was promised in the off season never arrived.
Now, with veterans ailing and the season lost, Colorado had a chance to give some young blood game experience. It didn’t happen.
Takeaways: Rivero got his second goal of the season to pair with a team-leading eight assists this season. Hill scored his third goal of the season against Chivas and this fourth total.
