The Colorado School of Mines women’s soccer team scored four-plus goals for the second straight game defeating Colorado Christian by a score of 5-0 on Wednesday evening in RMAC action at the CSM Soccer Stadium.

The two teams shared possession in the middle of the field for the first 20 minutes until Erin Onat put Mines on the board in the 24th minute. Onat collected the ball on a CCU clearance just outside the 18-yard box and her shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the line for her fifth goal of the season.

The Orediggers finished the match with 11 corners and scored on one of those in the 36th minute. A Kelsey Neal header was saved by CCU goalkeeper Kenzie Averill but Neal was there to put home the rebound for her second goal of the season.

Onat was taken down in the box in the 64th minute resulting in a CSM penalty kick. Anna Evans would convert to make it 3-0 for her sixth goal of the season.

Four minutes later Megan Woodworth’s corner kick found Kat Murphy who headed the ball back to the near post for her first goal of the season. The assist was Woodworth’s seventh of the season.

Mines would add one final goal in the 83rd minute. Joanna Graves played a perfect cross from the right side to the head of Maddie Woodard who was sprinting into the box. Woodard headed the ball to the far post and into the net for her first career goal.

Amy Hegarty made her first start in goal playing all 90 minutes earning her first career shutout. It was the fifth shutout of the season for Mines.

Next Up: The 10th-ranked Orediggers (7-0, 3-0 RMAC) will host sixth-ranked Metro State on Friday, Sept. 23rd at 7:30 pm.

(Photograph by Jessica Taves/ColoradoSoccerNow.com.)

No. 11 ranked Metro State men’s soccer team scored six second half goals in a Friday afternoon drubbing of Colorado Christian University.

The 7-1 win moved the Roadrunners to 6-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the Rocky Mountain Ahtletic Conference ahead of a Sunday meeting with conference leading Colorado School of Mines at noon on Sunday. The Cougars fell to 1-7-0, 1-3-0 RMAC.

Metro State outshot CCU 40-8 in the game. It was the first time since Oct. 9, 2004, that the Roadrunners attempted more than 40 shots in a game. The team attempted 44 against Embry Riddle in that game. On Friday, the Roadrunners also had 20 shots on goal, eight short of the school record.

Scott Grode was the biggest beneficiary of the outburst as he scored twice and assisted on two more goals in the rout. His first assist came on the first goal of the game, as Grode found Steve Emory in the 29th minute.

The lead was short lived, however, as Michael McHugh scored in the 36th minute. As the teams went to the half knotted at 1, Metro State had outshot its hosts 22-5.

Grode picked up his second assist when he found Marc Herschberger for a goal in the 48th minute. And then, the nervy game turned into an offensive outpouring.

Grode scored back-to-back goals in the 55th and 62nd minutes. Tyler Wilson scored his first career goal on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Freshmen Walter Bertini and Carlos Mendez each netted the first goal of their careers in the 79th and 83rd minutes, respectively.

Grode totaled six points on the day with two goals and two assists, tying a career-high in all three categories. Two of his three two-goal games in his career have come against CCU. Herschberger had a goal and an assist, the first time in his career he has had one of each in a game.

‘Keeper Dominique Griffith made three saves in the first half, but gave way to Issa Bissau after the CCU goal. Bissau stopped two shots to earn the win.

Adams State rallied for a 2-1 victory over Colorado Christian on Sunday afternoon.

The Adams State College women’s soccer team trailed early, but goals from freshman Shelby Janz and junior Jessica Hellweg allowed the Grizzlies to overcome the early deficit and claim their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory of the season 2-1 over Colorado Christian University on Sunday.

The win over the Cougars, now 0-6 overall and 0-2 in RMAC play, snaps a four-game losing streak and improves the Grizzlies record to 2-4 overall, with a 1-1 mark in conference play.

Ciara Meredith put the Cougars on the board early, striking a bouncing ball in the ASC box and putting it into the back of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. But freshman keeper Hannah Kohlts was a brick wall for the remainder of the match, making five saves, including a leaping deflection on a Cougars free kick during the 82nd minute that would have tied the game.

While the ASC offense was on target throughout the contest, putting 11 of its 19 shots on goal, it took the Grizzlies until the 37:27 mark to even the score at 1-1. Sophomore Skyler Stevens recorded her first career assist after finding Janz who placed a ball just out of reach of CCU’s Liana Signorile and into the upper right-hand corner of the net.

In the second half the ASC offense cooled off a bit, taking just six more shots but put four of them on goal, and were able to notch the game-winner off the foot of Hellweg, The junior forward dribbled her way up to the top of the Cougar’s box where she pulled and delivered a strike just between the keeper’s hand and the cross bar, putting the Grizzlies up for good, 2-1.

It was Hellweg’s fourth goal of the season, putting her just two away from her season-high of six, which she accomplished in 2009, and also moves her into a tie for third in career goals with 12.

Adams State will have a quick break before being back on Murphy Field for a Wednesday afternoon match-up with New Mexico Highlands at 3 p.m. Wednesday’s match will be the first of three in a span of six days for the Grizzlies, who will also play a pair of road games on Friday and Saturday.

The Cowgirls will enter the mid-week contest with a 3-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in RMAC play. After downing Colorado Christian 2-1 on Friday, New Mexico Highlands played a 1-1 draw with No. 3-ranked Metro State in Las Vegas, N.M. on Sunday.

Adams State came thisclose to the team's first win in RMAC play on Sunday, as Colorado Christian found a winner in the final seconds of overtime.

Just 19 seconds away from recording their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference point, the Adams State College men’s soccer team saw Sam Westlake strike from 30 yards out as the Colorado Christian University Cougars recorded its first RMAC win in eight years, Sunday afternoon in Alamosa.

The 2-1 double-overtime victory improved the Cougars to 1-5 overall and to 1-1 in RMAC play. The Grizzlies, who received a first-half goal from freshman Chris Roggow, his second of the season, after a nice David Powers’ run and assist, are now 0-5 overall and 0-2 in RMAC play.

Adams State grabbed the lead in the 17th minute and remained out front for more than 40 minutes before Tim Flavin of the Cougars scored the equalizer from close range off a pass from Grant Terzian.

In the first extra period, the Cougars fired off a pair of shots, both on goal, but Grizzlies freshman keeper Dillon Lee made saves on both en route to racking up 10 saves in the contest, tying fellow rookie keeper Paul Pizza for the team’s season high.

The Grizzlies seemed to be in control of the second overtime period, taking four shots to Colorado Christian’s two. But following an offsides call against Adams State at the 108:58 mark, the Cougars went on the attack. Westlake dribbled the ball towards the ASC box and wound up, placing a ball just out of reach of Lee who could only manage to tip the ball, and giving the Cougars the win.

Next up the Grizzlies will take on defending NCAA Division II National Champion Fort Lewis on Friday at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks, who topped the preseason national rankings and RMAC Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Poll, are currently unranked with a 2-3 overall record and are 1-0 in RMAC play. Fort Lewis fell to Colorado Mines in a non-conference match to start the season, and has suffered losses to Truman State (Mo.) and Columbia College (Mo.) as well, but topped CSU-Pueblo, 3-1, on Sunday in its first league match of the season.

Adams State was topped by a score of 9-1 in Durango last season as the Grizzlies faced the Skyhawks, ranked No. 10 nationally at the time, in just their second match in program history.

Forward Kyle Emge scored Regis’ lone goal, which produced the Rangers fifth win in as many games this season.

The entire first half went scoreless as Regis (5-0-0, 1-0-0 RMAC) controlled the pace of the game with 18 shots to the Cougars’ (0-5-0, 0-1-0 RMAC) two. Cougars ‘keeper Jared Jacobs kept Colorado Christian close with multiple saves throughout the afternoon.

After a narrow escape against Metro State on Sunday, the Western Washington Vikings produced a highlight reel of goals against Colorado Christian University 6-0.

Following the tight 2-1 game on Sunday, the Vikings put three goals up in the first half. Forward Gibson Bardsley scored a hat trick and midfielder Darragh Simm had a goal and an assist in the rout.

The Vikings improved to 3-1-1, extending their unbeaten streak to four with three wins and a tie. Colorado Christian fell to 0-4-0.

“We keep playing better and better,” said coach Travis Connell. “That’s what has been most impressive on this road trip, and that’s a good trend.”

Western Washington had a 29-15 lead in shots and an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Vikings’ six goals were the most since scoring six against Saint Martin’s on Nov. 7, 2008. Earlier that same season, the Vikings won 10-0 at Colorado Christian as Samir Vejo scored a school-record six goals.

Colorado Christian opens the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 1 p.m. Friday in Lakewood against Regis University.

Jordan Brandel scored twice, goalkeeper Wally Fink got on the scoresheet and Patrick Bonitatibus, Adam Hinkelman, James Copeland and Nathan Kafer added goals as Regis University wrapped up its regular season with a 7-0 victory on Tuesday at home against Colorado Christian.

The Regis University men’s soccer team sent its four seniors off in style, defeating Colorado Christian 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon in a makeup game from Friday. The Rangers ended the regular season with a 9-5-4 record and will face Fort Lewis in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament on Friday afternoon.

Early on, both teams were trying to find pace of the game, when freshman Patrick Bonitatibus took a ball up the right side and dribbled around a couple of defenders and powered home his third goal of the season at the 12:26 mark of the first half.

The defense for Colorado Christian (2-16-2, 0-13-1 RMAC) held the Ranger offense at one goal for nearly 26 minutes before another freshman, Adam Hinkelman, got a gift from the Cougars’ goalkeeper. Jared Jacobs came out of the box to retrieve a ball and kicked it to the middle of the field, where Hinkelman was waiting, Jacobs could not return to the net in time as Hinkelman had a wide open net and made the Cougars pay. It was his second goal of the season.

Senior James Copeland scored one more time for the Rangers in the first half off an assist from junior Nathan Kafer. Copeland then returned the favor to Kafer as Copeland found Kafer sliding in front of the net to score just three minutes into the second half.

Sophomore Jordan Brandel scored the next two goals for Regis, his fifth and sixth goals of the season, tying him for the team lead. Brandel was the beneficiary of a great pass from Copeland that put Brandel in a good spot to score.

Senior Wally Fink not only had a good game in goal, no goals allowed and five saves, but also capped off his stellar four-year career with his first goal scored of the season. Head Coach Tony McCall decided to put Fink in where he had begun his career, at forward, and it payed off. Fink took an excellent cross from Bonitatibus and beat his defender to the right and was able to blast the ball by the goalkeeper to make the final score 7-0.

Fink, Copeland, Donnie Montoya and Ryan Brennan all played in their final home game of their career.

Regis had 24 shots, compared with 11 for the visiting Cougars. Three goalkeepers, Fink and freshmen Francisco Martinez and Scott Brown all combined for the Rangers’ shutout.

Regis will take on Fort Lewis, ranked No. 2 in the nation, at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Durango. The match can be seen live via the B2 Networks. Log on to goskyhawks.com or rmacsports.org to view a schedule of the matches being broadcast.
