The unranked squads were victorious at Regis on Wednesday when the Roadrunners and Rangers met in two matches.

The Metro State Roadrunners and Regis Rangers met in two games on Wednesday, with the underdog prevailing in both matches at Regis.

In the end, it was the unranked Roadrunner men delivering a 4-0 thrashing of No. 16-ranked Regis, while the No.6-ranked Roadrunner women fell to the Rangers for their first loss of the season.

‘Runners 4, Rangers 0: For the men, Scott Grode started the scoring in the 15th minute, putting in a rebound of his own missed shot after Brenden Hughes passed him the ball in the box.

Marc Herschberger crossed a ball from the right side to Grode in the center of the box in the 30th minute and Grode headed it in to push the lead to 2-0.

The Roadrunners added one in the 60th minute. T.J. Thiebaut stole the ball near the top of the box and passed it to Kevin Pocalyko who was running toward the net from the left side and Pocalyko scored his second goal of the year.

Pocalyko found the net again eight minutes later after a free kick led to a scrum in front of the net.

Issa Bissau made three saves to earn the shutout for Metro State.

Superlatives: The win snapped a five-game winless streak for the Roadrunners against Regis, with the last win coming in 2008. The two teams played to four straight ties until Regis won 2-1 in overtime in October last fall.

It was also Metro State’s first victory over a ranked team since defeating No. 25 Fort Lewis on Oct. 15, 2010. Plus, it was the first win against a ranked team on the road since 2009.

Rangers 2, ‘Runners 1: It was the opposite story, as Regis rallied to take down the nationally ranked Roadrunner women.

The Rangers took a lead 15 minutes into the game when Taylor White connected on Rachel McMahon’s corner kick.

Metro State finally earned an Abby Rolph penalty kick in the 62nd minute when a Metro State cross into the box was touched with a hand. Rolph’s goal evened the score at 1-1.

Regis scored the winner in the 75th minute when Marissa Davis’ pass from the right sideline found Meghan Stuart for a 1-on-1 with goalkeeper Danielle Quigley. Stuart finished the scoring with a shot to the upper-right corner.

Streaking: The Roadrunners defeated Regis in 20 straight games between 2002 and the 2010 season. The Rangers have now won three straight against the Roadrunners, all by one-goal margins.

The Rangers women’s soccer went 2-for-2 on matches during the long holiday weekend.

The women socked the Concordia University at St. Paul, Minn., Golden Bears 5-0 on Labor Day.

Forward Jordan Miller scored two goals for the Rangers, midfielders Marissa Davis, Erin Kettmann and Kikki Arnold each had one goal.

Miller’s first goal came in the 23rd minute of play. She was assisted by forward Meghan Stuart. The second goal came shortly after the first in the 27th minute. From a free kick, Kettmann tapped it to Davis who banked a shot off the post. Arnold was there to finish off the goal and bring the score to 2-0.

The Rangers (2-0-0) gained possession once again in the 28th minute. Forward CC Rinehart delivered the ball to Kettmann who sent it to the back of the net for the last goal of the half.

The Rangers came out in the second half and maintained their level of play. In the 57th minute, Davis controlled the ball off a Golden Bear defender and ripped it through the goal from 15 yards out.

In the 62rd minute of play, Miller dribbled through three Concordia defenders and beat the goalie for the fifth and final goal of the game.

Ellen Augsburger and Nicole Eddings spent time in goal for the Rangers. Eddings saved one goal attempt for the Rangers. Kayla Kuczaboski was in goal for CU earning nine saves and allowing five goals.

Next Up: The Rangers return home on Friday at 5 p.m. as they host the Winona State Warriors.

Rangers 3, Minnesota-Duluth 1: Stuart opened her account with two goals on Saturday night at the Rangers overwhelmed the Bulldogs.

In the first half, Stuart scored in the 11th minute with assists by Davis and Miller. Her second goal came in the 55th minute of the match unassisted.

Rinehart also tallied one for the Rangers in the second half of the match. Shortly after Stuart’s goal, the Rangers received possession again. Assisted by Stuart, Rinehart scored in the 58th minute of play.

The Bulldogs kept the Rangers at bay for the rest of the game, but could only score one before the Regis women kept them from scoring again. The goal came in the 77th minute by Kelsy Gratz with the help of teammate Reegan Lloyd.

‘Keeper Augsburger garnered six saves on the day. Eddings also saw time in goal allowing one goal.

Another 110-minute battle and another tie for Fort Lewis and Metro State on Sunday, only this time penalty kicks provided a divider. Meanwhile, the Rangers found themselves in a shootout in Minnesota.

The Fort Lewis Skyhawks and the Metro State Roadrunners played some of the most entertaining games in the RMAC this fall. Each one was nervy and draws always looked likely.

Sunday was no exception as the two teams played 110 scoreless minutes before penalty kicks decided who would advance to the next round in the NCAA Division II women’s soccer championship.

The Skyhawks came away the winners 4-2 on PKs.

Metro State’s Sarah Tanous was the busier of the two ‘keepers, making 10 saves to Christine Schmelzle’s four as the two teams combined for 32 shots on the day. None of the shots, however, found the back of the net.

Final, with the Skyhawks leading 3-2 on penalty kicks after four rounds, Megan Striedel notched her penalty to send Fort Lewis past the Roadrunners.

Metro State ends its season at 12-5-4. The Skyhawks, 17-2-2, advance to play Winona State, which beat another RMAC school, Regis, on Sunday.

The Rangers had a 1-0 lead over Winona State during the first half that diminished during the second half when the Warriors tied the score. The game went into two overtime periods before Winona State claimed the victory during a shootout (4-2) to advance in the NCAA Tournament.

Meghan Stuart put the Rangers up when she was assisted by Marissa Davis, about midway through the first half. This lead extended through the half and into the beginning of the second half.

Warrior Rachel Neumann tied the score at one a short five and a half minutes into the second half. However, neither team was able to reach the back of the others’ net again during the half sending the game into overtime.

The Rangers outshot Winona State in both overtime periods posting four shots to the Warriors’ two. Of the six shots between the two teams, none were game winning forcing a shootout.

The No.3-ranked Colorado School of Mines men’s soccer team thrashed No. 11 Regis University by a score of 5-1 on Thursday afternoon at the CSM Soccer Stadium in the first round of the NCAA Tournament

The Rangers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in similar fashion to the last time these two teams met. Ben Fredrickson crossed a ball into the box and Nathan Kafer volleyed it home for his 16th goal of the season to give Regis a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.

However, Mines scored five unanswered goals with the first coming in the 11th minute of the match. After receiving a pass from Tesho Akindele, Chike Sullivan dribbled towards the goal a drilled a shot from long distance to tie the score.

CSM would take the lead in the 17th minute off the foot of Alex Nass. Nass collected the ball off an attempted shot by Sean Helster scoring from 25 yards.

The Orediggers added to their lead with a goal in the 19th minute. Sullivan hit a free kick far post bending it around the wall for his 11th goal of the season giving Mines a 3-1 lead.

Mines capped its four-goal half with a goal by Baski Baker in the 32nd minute. Nass sent a free kick from the sideline into the box finding Baker who turned and scored for his 12th goal of the season.

Early in the second half, Kafer had a chance to cut RU’s deficit in half with a penalty kick in the 47th minute but Kafer missed hitting the ball over the cross bar.

CSM added one final goal in the 59th minute once again on a long shot by Nass for his second goal of the match and fourth of the season.

The win was the first in program history in NCAA Tournament play for CSM. Mines did advance to the second round in 2005 by virtue of a penalty kick shootout.

The third-ranked Orediggers (17-1-2) will play a tough Midwestern State side in Wichita Falls, Texas, on Sunday.

A back-and-forth first half favored the Orediggers, and that's all they needed to take a 2-1 win on Friday.

Orediggers Tesho Akindele and Jacob Juett scored on each side of a goal by Ranger Ben Fredrickson in the first half on Friday as the Colorado School of Mines defeated Regis University 2-1 in a battle of top 20 teams.

Reflective of the matchup, Regis led in shots (32-10), corners (10-3), and fouls (15-10).

No. 3 ranked Mines, however, found the net first and more often. Akindele scored an unassisted goal in the 6th minute when he took the ball, dribbled around a defender and fired the ball into the lower left corner.

The lead held up until the 31st minute, when Fredrickson collected a pass back from in front of the goal by Kyle Emge and knocked it into the net.

It appeared the 18th-ranked Rangers and the Orediggers would go into the half tied. However, Juett restored the Mines margin in the 45th minute as Chike Sullivan served a ball that Juett headed into the net. For the second half, Oredigger goalkeeper Manville Strand kept the Rangers at bay and earned the win.

With the win, Mines moved to 7-0-0, 4-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Rangers dropped to 5-1-1, 1-1-1 RMAC.

Up next, Regis will face CSU-Pueblo at 7 p.m. next Friday in Pueblo. The conference-leading Orediggers host Metro State (6-1-1, 3-0-1) at noon on Sunday.

Neither side could find an advantage as Regis and Metro State tied for the fourth time on Wednesday.

There was no way to separate the Regis Rangers and the Metro State Roadrunners men’s soccer teams on Wednesday afternoon on Auraria Field.

No. 11 Metro State and No. 18 Regis University settled for a 2-2 draw, the fourth consecutive tie between the two teams. The last time either team won was on Sept. 21, 2008, when Metro State won 2-1 at Regis. The tie moved Metro State to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Regis is now 5-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the RMAC.

Taylor Diem put the Rangers on the board first as he buried a header off a cross from Justin Ortinau in the 22nd minute. Metro State’s Steven Emory netted the equalizer 11 minutes later scoring on a 25-yard free kick from just beyond the center of the box.

Scott Grode put Metro State on top as Emory headed a ball ahead for a breakaway in the 51st minute.

The Rangers’ Kyle Emge scored the final goal of the game to tie the score, scoring on a ball played through to the middle of the box by Ben Fredrickson in the 78th minute. Neither side could find an advantage during two overtime periods.

Dominique Griffith made two saves for Metro State after replacing Issa Bissau at half. Bissau stopped seven shots in the first half, but was removed from the game after receiving a yellow card in the 25th minute. The goal he surrendered was the first he had given up after starting and recording four straight shutouts.

Doug Passalaqua stopped three shots for Regis.

The Roadrunners will head to Colorado Christian for a 3:30 p.m. game on Friday. Regis hosts Colorado School of Mines at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

A freshman provided the difference on Wednesday as Regis bumped off the No. 3-ranked Roadrunners 3-2.

For 106 minutes, the Regis Rangers and Metro State Roadrunners played evenly on Wednesday afternoon.

In the 107th, freshman Rachel McMahon separated the two sides.

Her golden goal with 3:59 remaining in the second overtime period gave Regis a 3-2 win and signalled that the Roadrunners no longer occupy the roost in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

After winning eight straight conference titles, and repeatedly going through the RMAC with rarely a tie, Metro State fell to 5-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 in the confernce, and is now chasing Regis (5-3-0, 2-1-0 RMAC) and Colorado Mines (3-1-2, 2-0-0 RMAC). New Mexico Highlands, CSU-Pueblo, Fort Lewis and even Nebraska-Kearney are all bunched in the battle to lead.

Standings and history were irrelevant on Wednesday. At Auraria Field, Regis played spirited, attacking soccer, twice rallying from one-goal deficits.

After the two sides traded opening forays in the first 15 minutes, Metro State appeared to take control. The ‘Runners saw an Ashley Nemmers’ shot beat the defense and ping off the far post in the 19th minute. Nemmers then turned provider in the 30th minute, getting the ball to Michael’Ann Karas near the top of the box. Karas beat ‘keeper Ellen Augsburger to her right to put Metro State up 1-0.

Regis started to come alive after the goal, ultimately missing on three shots in the final three minutes of the half. This pattern continued in the second half with forward Jordan Miller looking particularly dangerous in runs from the right side. She was rewarded in the 59th minute when she connected on a pass from midfielder Marissa Davis and laced the ball to ‘keeper Alee Seehausen’s left to tie the score.

Metro State missed several opportunities to go back in front, the closest when midfielder Madison McQuilliams tagged the crossbar and post on a shot in the 62nd minute. Three minutes later, McQuilliams played a give-and-go with forward Aubrey Fondy. Fondy’s return pass found McQuilliams alone, and she buried her shot from 10 yards out.

Both sides sought another score as action moved from end to end of the field. Ranger Lauren Dorsey-Spitz finally found the equalizer in the 80th minute when she latched onto a ball that Metro State failed to clear off of a corner.

Neither side could find the advantage in regulation. Regis defender Taylor White delivered the smartest foul of the game when she cut down Fondy in the 83rd minute. Without that tackle — which led to a yellow card for White — Fondy would have been going at full speed, the ball on her right leg and only the ‘keeper to beat.

Metro State looked the more dangerous side in the first 10-minute overtime period. Freshman Nicole Pollack put a header over the bar in the 97th minute on the best scoring opportunity either side saw in the first OT frame.

The second stanza of OT saw both sides tiring. McMahon’s goal came as neither side looked threatening and the rain was starting to hamper field conditions.

At the end, the Regis players gathered to celebrate their victory. The ‘Runners walked off with a No. 3 national ranking that was sure to fall and a conference loss on their home field.

UNC enjoyed some fall weather in racing past Regis 4-0 in an exhibition match.

With the weather feeling more like October than August, the Northern Colorado women’s soccer squad looks to be in mid-season form as well after defeating Regis 4-0 in its final preseason tune-up before the regular season begins on Friday.

Krystine Dalton, a junior, got things rolling for the Bears by scoring on a breakaway in just the third minute. Less than a minute later, Northern Colorado struck again, this time with Ariel Cook scoring her second goal in two preseason games.

“I really liked how much energy we played with right out of the gate,” said Northern Colorado head coach Tim Barrera. “Even though its preseason, getting out to the early lead helped make it easier to play some other players.”

Following the two quick goals to start the game, the Bears finished out the half with a goal by freshman forward Brittany Dunn and a score from senior Brittani Knott. The score going into halftime was already 4-0.

In the second half, Barrera played more of his bench. The Bears played staunch defense, allowing just two shots on target the entire game.

“The girls played really well out there tonight,” Barrera said. “They are definitely excited to get the season underway and see what we can do against Wyoming.”

The Bears will head up to Wyoming to take on the Cowgirls on Friday.
