Denver has been included on a list of 18 cities that will be part of the United States’ bid to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022. The announcement was made Tuesday afternoon in New York by the U.S. bid committee.

The other cities included in the bid were Los Angeles; Atlanta; Kansas City, Mo.; San Diego; Phoenix; Dallas; Seattle; Tampa, Florida; Indianapolis; Baltimore; Nashville, Tennessee; Houston; Miami; Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; Boston; and New York.

The evaluation and selection process began in April, when 70 cities were contacted as potential bid cities. That number was narrowed to 58 then 27 in August. The bid committee took FIFA requirements, hotel accommodations, transportation, sustainability and soccer passion into consideration when they narrowed the list.

The U.S. is competing against Australia, England, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Netherlands/Belgium and Portugal/Spain to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022. FIFA is expected to select host countries for the events in December.
