Northern Colorado got the season off to a promising start on Friday night as the Bears traveled to Wyoming and came away with a 2-1 win.

Goals from Danielle Birdsall in the 32nd and 51st minutes proved to be enough for the Bears. Jenny Johnson’s goal in the 53rd minute off an assist from Nahiomy Ortiz brought the Cowgirls within striking distance, but the hosts were unable to close the gap.

The first goal in Birdsall’s brace came off a cross from Olivia Deadmond. Birdsall delivered her second goal off a pass from Brittany Dunn.

Goalkeeper Kirstin Salminen had five saves for the Bears. Courtney Merkle had four for Wyoming.

Northern Colorado hosts Air Force at 2 p.m. Sunday.
