The Rapids definitively needed a win and on Saturday night the team delivered a definitive victory in eviscerating the Portland Timbers 3-0.

Colorado (7-8-1) scored early to take control and late to make it a rout in dismantle the Timbers. Jaime Castrillon scored in the 18th minute and Conor Casey tallied four minutes later as Oscar Pareja’s offense finally showed signs of coming together. Jamie Smith made the win complete when he delivered the coup de grace in the 89th minute.

Blasting the Timbers was the salve the Rapids needed after losing two straight, including an a mal 2-1 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes on June 20. For one night, it turned the team that appeared incapable of finding the story into one that looked capable of beating anyone.

Why It Matters: July is the crucible of the MLS season. Teams either come together or they fall apart during the month. The Rapids have struggled to stay at .500 during the month, even in the best of times. This season has not been the best of times, and starting July with three straight losses would have meant waiting until 2013 for the next playoff berth.

Instead of trying to ponder whether this team can thrive in the 4-3-3, the Rapids can spend the next day relishing a comprehensive victory.

Individual Honors: Casey picked up his first goal of the year, as did Smith. Castrillon netted his fifth goal of the season and is showing signs of becoming a force in the attack.

Getting Casey on the scoreline is critical to this team’s success. Getting a tally from the fiery Smith was a nice bonus. Getting all these and a shutout was just what the team needed.

Next Up: The Rapids now get to turn to hosting the team’s annual July 4 match. On Wednesday, Colorado takes on the Vancouver Whitecaps at 7:30 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.
